Spring will be here in a couple of weeks. Fishing in Lake Pontchartrain this winter has been good. The lake is holding plenty of speckled trout and as the water warms up the bite will get better. When the water temperature reaches 67 degrees the trout will begin moving out East to start their spawn. Before then they’ll be staging in the lake, feasting on the bait fish that will be moving back into the lake. Hopefully, we’ll have a gradual increase in water temperature to that point, to prolong the staging time.
In March we’ll be fishing Lake Pontchartrain mostly, catching speckled trout, black drum, sheephead, and flounder. The nice thing about this month is the very short boat ride. On a typical March day we’ll be fishing the famous “Lake Pontchartrain Trestles”, which is well known for spectacular fishing in New Orleans, and just a couple miles from the dock. As we enter April, we’ll most likely begin catching more at Lake Borgne’s rigs and reefs. Around this time, I like to start targeting redfish on the weekends to escape the crowds.
