Mild weather in December allowed fishing, in the Lake Pontchartrain area, to remain consistent. Shrimp were still plentiful in the lake so we focused on the deep passes connecting Lake Borgne to Pontchartrain. With the warmer water temperature, the redfish were most likely enjoying staying in the shallow ponds and shorelines. Speckled trout were not hard to find and were still located from the Pearl River to Lake Catherine and in the Mississippi River–Gulf Outlet Canal (MRGO). The trestles were still producing quality trout, however, there were more boats than fish there, so we avoided the train tracks. Looking forward to Spring, as long as the Mississippi River doesn’t get above 17’, we should have an incredible speckled trout bite at the trestles. Until then, we’ll most likely be working in the MRGO, throwing live shrimp and Zoom Flukes.
